Guatemala's Fuego volcano has erupted spewing smoke and ash into the sky a kilometre above its crater.

The volcano lies 25 kilometres southwest of the capital Guatemala City. Already around 8,000 people have been evacuated from nearby towns with fears another 23,000 will have to be moved.

State emergency services are monitoring the situation closely.
