Macy's Employee Retires After 73 Years at Same Store - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.
Macy’s Department store’s longest working employee has retired after 73 years on the job. 93 year old Rose Syracuse started working at the Macy’s in New York City’s Herald Square when she graduated high school at the age of 17.
When she started in 1939, she was paid 15 dollars a week for her services. It was her first job and she liked it, so she stayed on.
Over the years she has seen many co-workers and supervisors come and go, and she had planned to keep working at Macy’s, until she broke her hip this year and was forced to retire. The CEO of Macy’s presented her with a bouquet of roses in a ceremony honoring Syracuse and other employees.
Senior citizens can live long productive lives if they stay in the work place. Britain’s oldest employee died last year at the age of 104 after garnering media attention for both warding off a gang of would be muggers, and for reportedly being the oldest person to complete the London marathon.
