Just a year ago, international bankers likened President Ollanta Humala, Peru's new populist president, with Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.

Now, Humala is trying to turn around his public image as he is swamped by accusations that he has abandoned the poor amid unresolved land disputes and a deadly crackdown on a workers rights' protest.

Al Jazeera's Mariana Sanchez reports from Lima.
