STORY: An estimated 100,000 demonstrators marched in Santiago, Chile on Tuesday in a prolonged battle over education reform.

Teachers' groups and student organizations called a strike and took to the streets in massive numbers.

Police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the protesters who barricaded the streets and threw rocks and other objects at the police.

Chile's students have led regular protests calling for education reform for over a year. The students say they are frustrated at government's failure to deliver what they consider to be an adequate response to their demands.

In Chile tuition costs are among the world's highest. A report by Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said Chilean households pay up to 75 percent of education costs, saddling many with high interest loans.
