Five cooling towers at a disused power station in the East Midlands of England were demolished in a controlled explosion on Sunday. The towers, at High Marnham Power Station, were brought down after standing for more than 50 years at the site in Retford, Nottinghamshire. The coal-fired power station was closed in 2003. The owner, power company E.ON, said there were no current plans for development at the site, but the towers had been removed because they could have become unsafe. They said that extensive clear-up work would continue on the site for many months.
