The Israeli Prime Minister has reiterated his country's friendship with the U.S. and said the Jewish state was ready for 'painful compromises' to achieve peace with the Palestinians. Benjamin Netanyahu is addressing both U.S. parties at Congress. But earlier, he flatly denied his state would return to the pre-1967 borders with the Palestinians, the solution Barack Obama has called for. He said returning to those borders would leave his country 'indefensible', and blamed the Palestinians' unwillingness to recognise the Jewish state for the deadlock in the conflict. A few days ago Barack Obama called on Israel to accept the proposal backed by the UN, EU and Russia. Israel met the suggestion with heavy criticism, as the deal would mean withdrawing from occupied Palestinian territories. Political writer and blogger Emily Hauser says Benjamin Netanyahu's comments reveal he's never really supported the peace process.
