Miners armed with spears and machetes and hanguns were gunned down by police outside a platinum mine northwest of Johannesburg. Forty four people were killed.
Many of the women are appealing for leniency for the miners, who are in many cases, their families' sole breadwinners. They miners face charges including murder, attempted murder and assault.
