A tense stand off in this mainly Kurdish-populated town of Hakkari in south-eastern Turkey.

Demonstrators were protesting the arrival of Turkish interior minister, Idris Naim Sahin.

The minister, shielded by police, was greeted by jeers and catcalls by the crowd.

As the atmosphere became more tense, police fired into the air to disperse the crowd - and Sahin was pushed into a shop for safety.

The minister, who was visiting security forces in the area for Ramadan, was later taken to a local governor's office .

Kurds using firecrackers and petrol bombs clashed with police in Hakkari as they mark the 28th anniversary of the Kurdistan Workers' Party armed struggle for Kurdish independence.
