United Nations humanitarian chief Valerie Amos held talks in Beirut on Thursday (August 16) to increase aid to more than 30,000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon who have fled the violence in Syria over the past 17 months.

Amos met with Lebanese Minister for Social Affairs, Wael Abu Faour, and is set to meet other officials and visit Syrian refugees who have been mostly taking refuge in northern and eastern Lebanon.

Amos urged government forces and rebels to do more to protect civilians caught up in the violence.

"I have called on more than one occasion for all of those engaged in the fighting to remember that civilians need to be protected and I am concerned about the kinds of pictures and stories that we are hearing increasingly about the impact of the violence," she said.
