Indonesia: land of milk and diapers

With 22 million babies and toddlers in Indonesia, the country is fast becoming a haven for manufacturers of powered milk and disposable diapers

Young mothers like Suherna Purnomo spends about $55 a month on them.

(SOUNDBITE) (Bahasa Indonesia) MOTHER SUHERNA PURNOMO, SAYING:

"Disposable diaper is for practicality, with disposable diapers he sleeps well day and night. I have tried using the cloth diapers, he did not like it,"

Milk consumption has grown over nine percent a year from 2006 to 2011.

Official figures show Indonesia is the second fastest growing market in Asia after China.

The young population is fast attracting investors to the sprawling archipelago.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) BRAND AND MARKETING CONSULTANT, SAYING:

"If you look at the demographics of Indonesia at this moment of course the average age of Indonesia's population is only 27. so they are very young and in the productive stage of having families. That's why the demand of milk and demand of diapers is very increasing,"

Indonesians drink less milk than most other countries in Asia, showing potential for growth.

Another reason Indonesia is tempting to investors is its high birth rate - Asia's second after India.
