A Coventry fireman recently encountered an unusual disaster while innocently running errands. Ben Forrer was dropping off an old cooker at a scrapyard 16 miles away from his home. After leaving his parked van for several minutes, he returned to find his vehicle missing. He searched the yard before his sights landed on the vehicle, hanging from a crane hook. He yelled ‘stop’ but the damage had already been done. It turns out, salvage workers mistakenly thought the van was scrap metal. Forrer was not only left without a ride, but also the power tools that he was using to help construct his home were in the van and damaged.

Forrer is naturally upset and says "I can't believe what's happened. It was parked in an area where there was no indication this might happen. What if I had a kid or a dog in the vehicle? They didn't check to see if anybody was inside." The scrapyard admits to their mistake and has apologized, but Forrer is claiming nearly $8,000 for his ruined goods on the company’s insurance.
