A passenger train travelling in southern India caught fire on Monday (July 30), leaving at least 30 people dead and 25 injured.

A carriage of the Tamil Nadu Express, travelling from the capital New Delhi to southern Chennai city, caught fire as it was passing through the Nellore station.

The affected carriage was left completely charred.

Operations are in full swing to recover and identify the victims.

Officials said 72 passengers were travelling in the carriage at the time of the blaze. Most of them were asleep when the incident happened.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but local media said it was caused by an electrical short circuit.
