Turkey has lashed out against the Syrian government's crackdown on anti-government protests.

Abdullah Gul, the Turkish president, said his country had lost its confidence in Syria, adding "there is no place for totalitarian regimes and one-party systems. Clearly these will change either by force of by political initiative taken by leaders of these states".

Syria earlier objected to an Arab League statement demanding an end to the bloody crackdown.

In the latest violence, activists said at least five people were killed by government troops across the country on Sunday.

Al Jazeera's Nisreen El-Shamayleh reports from the Jordan-Syria border.
