Saudi Arabia's labour ministry will no longer issue work visas for Indonesians and Filipinos, according to state news.

There are more than one million Indonesians and 1.5 million Filippinos working in Saudi Arabia.

Jakarta has decided to stop sending workers to the kingdom after the execution of an Indonesia maid in mid-June.

Manila has been trying to negotiate assurances of better treatment and wages for its workers.

In Saudi Arabia, Filipinos can earn more money than they do at home, but they also know that there are few labour laws to protect them.

The money overseas Filipinos workers send home every year is in the billions of dollars. But only a small portion of that comes from domestic helpers.

Al Jazeera's Marga Ortigas reports from Manila.
