Mystery Over an Air Force Plane Landing - as part of the news series by GeoBeats.
The Air Force is left scratching their heads after a C-17 Globemaster Military cargo plane accidentally landed at the wrong airport. The plane was flying into the United States from South Asia. The crew noticed that they were about to land at the Peter O. Knight Airport on Davis Island in Florida, instead of the MacDill Air Force Base, which is about four miles away. But to avoid an accident, they landed anyway. The C-17 measures about one hundred yards from wing tip to wing tip and is almost five stories tall, costing around 200 million dollars.
The incident is under investigation and the military is not releasing details about it, which leads to a few conspiracy theories. One of the theories suggests that perhaps President Barrack Obama was aboard the aircraft. This springs from an eye witness telling someone that they saw the President in the windows of the plane. An airport official commented on this rumor by saying that the plane “doesn't have any windows. Obama would have to be a pilot." The most popular explanation is just plain old pilot error possibly caused by fatigue from the long flight.
