TV9 Special: 'God Father' Movie Reviews With Upendra, Soundarya Jayamala - 2/4....,

Godfather is an Indian Kannada-language film directed by cinematographer turned director Sethu Sriram starring Superstar Upendra and Soundarya Jayamala in the lead roles. Sadha and Catherine Teresa also play the prominent roles and Bhumika Chawla makes a special appearance. The film is one of the most anticipated films of 2012. The film is remake of the 2006 Tamil blockbuster Varalaru that starred Ajith Kumar, Asin Thottumkal and Kanika Subramaniam in the lead roles.[1]Internationally acclaimed composer, A. R. Rahman who composed music for the original Tamil version, is the composer of the Kannada version too. The film is set to release on 27 July 2012 and is one of the major releases of the year, after Katari Veera Surasundarangi.
The film went on floors on 28 April 2011 in Bangalore at Abbaiah Studios. Producer K. Manju first roped in Upendra and then went on to cast Simran and the daughter of yesteryear actress Jayamala, Soundarya. But Simran opted out due to her maternal call and Sadha replaced her for the role. Another budding actress, Catherine Tresa is also roped in to reprise the role originally played by Kanika Subramaniam in the Tamil version.[2]It was P. C. Sreeram who insisted his long time friend A. R. Rahman to compose the music for the movie; .[3][4][5][6]

Initial reports wrongly reported that cinematographer P. C. Sriram would be the director of the film. Sethu Sriram, who had apprenticed under the veteran cinematographer and independently shot films like Samurai and Priyasakhi, directed the film.
The Academy Award winning composer A. R. Rahman retained most of his compositions from the Tamil version and composed only one fresh track for the Kannada version. [8]The film soundtrack album has seven songs, five have lyrics penned by K. Kalyan and remaining two each by Devappa Hassan[9] and other by Kaviraj. The dialogues are by Apthamitra and Aptharkshaka fame V. R. Bhaskar[10] [11].Considering the budget limitations of the Kannada film industry, the composer hardly accepted any remuneration for the project. A crore expenditure was accounted for the studio, artists, instruments, recording and re-recording. The score was completed in a span of six months. [12]Initially, the audio launch was scheduled on 31st May 2012 on Palace Grounds, Bengaluru but was postponed due to 'India closed'.[13] The audio launch was done in a grand manner in Chancery Hotel, Bengaluru on 2nd June 2012. Featuring presence of the music composer gracing the occasion in the private event, the cast and crew of the film, veteran actor Ambareesh, top composers and lyricists of the Kannada film industry were also present at the occasion. Singers Vijay Prakash, Swetha Mohan and Naresh Iyer each of them performed one song live in the event.[14] The audio rights had been acquired by Samartha Ventures' label 'Ashwini Media Networks'.

As Superstar Upendra plays lead role in two films Katari Veera Surasundarangi and Godfather the producers of their respective films had discussions over the back to back release of two films with the same lead actor. As per reports, the producer had pushed the release date of Godfather to 3rd May 2012.[18] However, the mounting spar of the tussle so as to which film must release first was left unsolved. KFCC, part of South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce intervened the matter so claiming that the film getting censored first was due to release.[19] The producer of the film stated the production to be continuing for over 12 months and naturally wanted Godfather to release before Katari Veera Surasundarangi. The release was re-scheduled in 2nd week of May 2012. However, after several rounds of discussions, avoiding clashes of the film with other film of actor Upendra, the release was confirmed for either 2nd week of June 2012 as censoring was pending.[20][21] The production house was unsatisfied with promotional activities done before release of the film, eventually the release date got pushed to 27 June 2012 and is one of the major releases of the year after Katari Veera Surasundarangi.
