A new city for China.

In the disputed territory of the South China Sea, the new city of Sansha was formally established in a ceremony Tuesday.

On the island known in English as Woody Island, a ceremony was led by the new city's first mayor, Xiao Jie.

The celebrations formalized China's decision last month to up the island's status to a city with a military garrison.

Official state news agency Xinhua said the new garrison would be responsible for defence mobilisation, disaster relief and carrying out military missions.

The South China Sea has become Asia's biggest potential military flashpoint as Beijing's claim over the area has set it against Vietnam and the Philippines.
