Police in Brazil say they have pushed members of a powerful drug gang out of the sprawling Vila Cruzeiro shantytown in Rio de Janeiro following six days of deadly gun battles.

Many gang members have now fled into a neighbouring shantytown, as police continue their crackdown on drug gangs in the city.
