On Saturday, Malaysians began observing the holy month of Ramadan.
During Ramadan, they will go without food and water during daylight hours.
At dusk, they break their fast with family and friends, eating traditional foods like this local porridge made with meat and vegetables.
It is also a time for reflection, religious study and charity.
(SOUNDBITE) (Bahasa Melayu) MOSQUE-GOER, MAT SAMAN ABU BAKAR SAYING:
"Muslims around the world should be united and be kind to every ethnicity and become more familiar with Islamic teachings so that we don't clash with other religions."
More than 60 percent of Malaysia's 27 million citizens are Muslim.
