An Italian and two Spanish hostages have been freed in northern Mali by the al Qaeda linked Movement for Unity and Jihad.

The aid workers were seized in Algeria last October and transferred to northern Mali, which is under the control of a number of armed Islamist groups.

The Spanish government has confirmed the release of all three.
