(SOUNDBITE) (Dari) AFGHAN DEFENSE MINISTRY SPOKESMAN, GENERAL ZAHIR AZIMI, SAYING:

"The Afghan army soldier who killed the French soldiers has been sentenced to death according to army law, articles number one and six. After the investigation the accused soldier acknowledged his crime in the presence of his defense lawyer and the court announced its decision."

The soldier, Abdul Sabor, was sentenced to be hanged by a military court --- for his involvement in an attack that killed four soldiers and wounded 15 others while jogging at their base in the country's east.

France has accelerated its withdrawal plan from Afghanistan with all of its troops expected to leave by the end of this year, breaking with NATO's timetable for withdrawal.
