STORY: Robert Downey Jr. understands a few things about his fans and the love of his super hero character, "Iron Man."

The actor showed up in San Diego for the annual Comic Con convention on Saturday (July 14) and stressed the importance of giving moviegoers what they want.

"The audiences have been driving the direction that movies go in for quite some time now, and I think that Comic-Con is just a 'stark' reminder that 'fans first'," explained Downey Jr.

The actor, who arrived for a surprise visit took time to meet and hang out with his young fans who were taking part in an "Iron Man" costume contest and answered their questions during a Q&A session.

The newest installment of the series, "Iron Man 3" is expected to open in 2013.
