German Chancellor Angela Merkel has backed the Muslim and Jewish communities' right to carry out circumcision.

Her spokesman said the operation carried out "in a responsible manner must be possible without punishment."

It follows a Cologne court's ruling that a child's right to physical integrity is more important than their parents' religious beliefs.
