A French industrial designer has designed a futuristic method for washing clothes. Submitted to the global design competition Electrolux Design Lab in 2010, the appliance cleans garments using no soap, no water, no noise, and a major bonus - completes in a matter of minutes.
Named Orbit, the design consists of an outer ring comprised of large batteries that levitate an inner glass and metal spherical basket that holds the garments. How does this all work exactly?
Liquid nitrogen is used to super-cool the basket allowing it to become superconductive. The batteries in the outer ring create a magnetic field, allowing the basket to levitate. Inside the sphere, dry ice is turned instantaneously from its solid form to a gas – carbon dioxide – and is blasted at the clothes.
Known as cryogenic cleaning, the CO2 breaks down dirt particles which are filtered out through a tube. The CO2 is sucked back into the sphere and re-frozen for future use.
Completely off the grid, the appliance requires no power as the batteries are re-charged by energy captured from the levitating basket.
It is an intriguing look at how today’s innovation may become a reality for future generations.
