A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck western China Saturday (June30) near the border with Kazakhstan just after 5 am local time.

At least 10 people have been injured. No deaths have been reported.

The region is home to the mainly Muslim Uighur people, local media say.

Witnesses said the shaking lasted about 10 seconds and forced some people to rush out of their homes into the streets.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake was very shallow, only 11.2 (18 km) below the Earth's surface.
