ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION

A drought has hit the western part of North Korea, state media KCNA reported on Saturday (June 23).

Video provided by KCNA for Reuters showed dried corn and rice fields and KCNA said the drought had affected parts of North Hwanghae Province.

The situation in Hwangju County where much of the province's grains are produced was especially bad, it said.

As of June 23, crops were withering away in an area in the province covering nearly 20,000 hectares.

Seoul's Yonhap News agency reported on Wednesday (June 20) that a severe dry spell in North Korea was expected to exacerbate chronic food shortages.

The United Nations estimates that North Korea's food shortfall this year should be less than last year, but even in a good year the country struggles to feed itself.
