Rescued from a life of labour in harsh conditions.

Over 100 children were freed when police raided textiles factories near Mumbai in western India.

There are an estimated 60 million child labourers in India, driven into work by poverty.

(SOUNDBITE) (Hindi) CHIEF OF RESCUE OPERATION (PROGRAM HEAD) OF PRATHAM NGO, NAVNATH KAMBLE, SAYING:

"It's a crime to make children work under force, and we came to know that the factory owners were not letting them go home after toiling for the whole day at work. We complained to the labour department that nearly 500 - 600 children were working under pressure and should be rescued."

Although child labour is illegal in India, many children as young as five work 14 hours a day.

25 people were arrested in the raid, including a factory owner.
