The European Union said normalisation of relations between Kosovo and Serbia are a key condition for Belgrade to gain EU entry.

Tomislav Nikolic, the new nationalist Serb president, said he understood EU demands to mean better relations with breakaway Pristina not official recognition.

Nikolic is on his first foreign trip since being elected in May.
