Georgian churches placed on UN endangered list

Unesco, the world heritage body, says the historic churches of Mtskheta, Georgia's ancient capital, are "outstanding examples" of Caucasus mediaeval religious architecture.

But last year, amid signs of a serious deterioration in the churches' stonework and frescoes, the UN put the site on its "danger list" and asked the Georgian government to do more to preserve the buildings.
