Thousands of demonstrators remained camped out in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Wednesday night as dozens of wounded protesters were being treated in makeshift hospitals.

A brief attempt by Egypt's military to interpose a ceasefire between riot police and civilians near the epicentre of protests against military rule earlier disintegrated into another night of violence.
