Former newspaper executive Rebekah Brooks, at the centre of Britain's phone hacking scandal, has been laying bare her close ties to top politicians.

She told the Leveson Inquiry into press ethics that Prime Minister David Cameron was among those who commiserated with her when she had to quit in disgrace.
