NBA Jam is like a historical analysis of the theories of James Naismith compared to Mario Hoops 3 on 3. This is like a bizarre strategy game that just happens to involve an inflated leather ball. The fundamental problem with Mario Hoops 3 on 3 is that it misses what made prior Mario sports games so good. It's not an arcadey version of its sport, like a Mario Power Tennis or Mario Superstar Baseball. Instead, it plays more like a basketball minigame from a Mario Party. It wears thin within minutes. It's a beautiful game that looks the part, but when it comes to gameplay and controls, the game shoots a bit of an air ball.
