A demonstration to highlight the plight of Palestinian prisoners took place in the West Bank, alongside the prisoners' mass protest. The demonstration turned violent, with protesters throwing rocks and Israeli soldiers firing tear gas.

A group of Palestinians staged a march near Ofer Military Camp in the West Bank, south of Ramallah, on Thursday, in support of a mass protest inside the prison.

The Ofer Military Camp is one of several Israeli prisons and detention centres in the West Bank where Palestinian prisoners are held.

Some 1,350 Palestinian prisoners are now doing a mass hunger strike over a list of complaints, including Israel's administrative detention policy which allows prisoners to be held without trial.

Protesters gathered at the gate of the military camp, some carrying pictures of those apparently held in jail.

One protester had his mouth covered in tape, showing solidarity with those on hunger strike.

After around 20 minutes, the protest turned violent. Israeli soldiers fired tear gas towards the protesters, who set tyres on fire and threw stones at the troops.

Israeli troops also arrested Abdallah Abu Rahmah, a prominent Palestinian activist, at the scene.

The Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike are also protesting against the alleged use of solitary confinement, the difficulty in securing family visits and against strip searches they say are imposed on visitors.
