Indonesia earthquake stokes tsunami worries

A powerful 8.6 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia and a series of strong aftershocks had people scurrying from buildings as far away as southern India.

Shops are closed and many waited for updates about a possible tsunami

He's telling locals not to panic ---

Some began seeking higher ground --- memories of the tsunami eight years ago that killed 170,000 people in fresh in their mind.

In Thailand, tourists waited for further guidance.

SOUNDBITE: "Tourist saying:

"We are a little unsure what is happening at the moment. It would be nice to know whether we can go back to the hotel, whether it is safe. We are supposed to be leaving tomorrow so it will be interesting to see."

The earthquake that struck near Indonesia's Sumatra Island prompted evacuations all along India's eastern coastline.
