Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, will mark 20 years of war on Friday, with a concert to remember the dead.

Around 200 international media journalists who covered the fighting will join in, staying at the infamous Holiday Inn hotel.

The Holiday Inn hotel became the media headquarters during the war, which was documented in the film - 'Welcome to Sarajevo'.

The anniversary event will stage over 11,500 red chairs along the city's main street - each one representing the Sarajevans killed in the war during 1992 to 1995.

The shooting at peace protesters in Sarajevo 20 years ago marked the start of the country's bloody siege and war.

Nearly half of the Balkan country's 4.4 million people were displaced from their homes and 100,000 killed.

The Bosnian Serbs, helped by the Serb-dominated Yugoslav army (JNA), surrounded Sarajevo in the longest siege in modern history, killing people at random from surrounding hilltops.

Civilians were killed while queuing for water, burying the dead or collecting firewood.

Among them were nearly 650 children.
