Re-enacting Jesus' walk to his death on the cross has become a Good Friday tradition for residents of the German town of Bensheim.

Nearly 100 actors took part in the procession which follows Jesus as he carries the cross to his eventual crucifixion.

According to the Bible, at the moment of his death, Jesus calls out to God.

"My God, My God, Why have you forsaken me?"

Three days after his death, according to the bible, Jesus rises from the dead.

Good Friday marks the official start of Easter, and is the foundation for one of the Christian church's key beliefs --- that death does not signify the end but a new beginning.

Easter is the most important festival in the Christian calendar.
