Have you ever wondered why there are flies? The Nigerian priest Godfrey Nzamujo understood that they eat rotting left-overs, when food is rich they quickly lay eggs and before long maggots proliferate. Maggots are rich in protein and a favorite of fish and birds. Father Nzamujo created a special zone at the Songhai Center in Porto Novo, Benin where all slaughter waste is offered to flies. Maggots are fed to fish and quails, cutting costs generating food.

The British scientist Stephen Brittland studied the age-old successful tradition to treat open wounds with maggots and offered it solid science -- he established Advanced Gel Technologies in Bradford by Leeds. The US and British governments have approved wound treatment by maggots, but costs remain high. However, when Father Nzamujos maggots are made to vomit by simply throwing them into salt water, then enzymes can be collected, purified and sterilized at a fraction of the cost.
