There are myths as to the fire-resistance requirements between a home and an attached garage. Often, the separation between a dwelling and the garage is, incorrectly so, referred to as a "firewall." In fact, at residential construction, safety guidelines do not require a firewall between a garage and the house. Most jurisdictions require "limited fire-resistance". Guidelines may vary, so inquire with local building officials to find out more about the requirements for your community.
This slide show, produced by Steven L. Smith of King of the House Home Inspection, describes fire-resistance requirements. Smith is Washington state licensed home inspector, #207 and a member of the WA state home inspector licensing advisory board.
