Obama to Visit DMZ - World's Most Dangerous Border - as part of the news and politics series by GeoBeats.

As part of attending a nuclear security summit in Seoul, President Obama plans to visit the highly publicized, Demilitarized zone between North Korea and South Korea on March 25th. The visit is aimed at underscoring support for the 28,000 US troops and America's security alliance with South Korea.

The Korean DMZ was established in 1950s. Bill Clinton referred to DMZ as 'the scariest place on Earth'. At nearly 150 miles long and 2.5 miles wide, it is the world's most heavily militarized border.

Home to 2 million armed troops, it is surrounded by barbed wire with location identifiers for minefields and infantry trenches as part of its landscape.

Since the 50s, the DMZ has been the site of many incidents including the 1976 one in which North Koreans used axes to kill two US officers while they were cutting a tree.

Not many people realize, there are actually 2 villages within the DMZ - one from each country. The North Korean village seems to have modern infrastructure from far but closer observations show little activity and sparse interiors.

For those interested, there are day trips you can take to the DMZ and see the troops up close. But first, you must sign a release saying that you are entering a hostile area and there's a
possibility of injury or death.
