The aftermath of a Taliban attack on southern Afghanistan's main prison in June 2008 - in which the suspected Toulouse gunman escaped.

Mohamed Merah fled this Kandahar jail during the prison break that day, along with 1000 other inmates including 400 Taliban militants.

Merah is a French citizen of Algerian origin, who is believed to be behind three attacks in the Toulouse region, including Monday's shooting at a Jewish school that killed four.

He was detained for bomb making in Afghanistan in 2007, and sentenced to three years behind bars.

But months later Merah was freed during the attack on the prison where he was being held.

He is suspected of killing seven people in the name of al Qaeda, including three children.
