Troops and police study the scene of a roadside bomb blast in southern Thailand in which four soldiers died and a fifth was seriously wounded.

Their jeep was one of two military vehicles heading back to their base after providing security at a Buddhist ritual in Rue-soh district of Narathiwat province.

The explosive device was a 20-kilogramme cooking gas cannister buried beneath the dirt road and wired with a remote detonator.

Three of the victims died instantly, the fourth died on arrival at hospital.

Thousands of people, including soldiers, officials, Muslims and Buddhists, have been killed on Thailand's southern border with Malaysia in the past seven years.

Thai authorities blame Malay Muslim separatist groups fighting to bring back their Sultanate Pattani Islamic state.
