STORY: Pope Benedict XVI made a rare visit to a parish in southern Rome on Sunday , where he was greeted by a crowd of children chanting "Long Live the Pope."

The pope was scheduled to give a homily at the parish of San Giovanni Battista de La Salle, but he made the unusual move of walking down a local street first to see the crowd.

During the mass later, he urged better religious education for the youth, saying 'religious illiteracy' was one of the greatest problems facing the world today.
