The Afghan Taliban says it carried out a car bomb attack at Jalalabad airport in eastern Afghanistan that's killed at least three people.

The militants said the bombing at the airport gates was in revenge for the burning of copies of the Koran at a NATO air base.

Police say the dead were civilians.

At least 15 other people have been wounded in the attack.

The bombing on Monday came after a week of violent protests across the country over the destruction of copies of the Muslim holy book.

Muslims consider the Koran to be the literal word of God and treat each copy with deep reverence.

Desecration is considered one of the worst forms of blasphemy.
