Talks are expected to focus on the situation in Syria ahead of a key conference Friday (February 24, 2012) of the "Friends of Syria" in Tunis.

On Thursday (February 23, 2012), the United States, Europe and Arab nations met in London to hammer out the details of an ultimatum for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the details of which will be presented at the conference.

Panetta and Fiesal are also expected to discuss Iran's nuclear program, as well as the Middle East peace process. Jordan is spearheading talks in Amman between Palestinians and Israelis in an effort to resume negotiations after a 15-month lapse.
