Iranian state television broadcast wall-to-wall rallies across the country to mark the 1979 Iranian Islamic revolution on Saturday (February 11).

Tens of thousands of demonstrators waved Iranian flags and hoisted pictures of both the revolution's late leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, and his successor, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also addressed the nation in a commemorative speech in Tehran's Azadi (freedom) square, where he said the Islamic Republic would soon announce "very important" achievements in the nuclear field, state TV reported. He gave no details.

The United States and its European allies have imposed new sanctions to try to force Tehran back to talks

before it produces enough nuclear material for an atomic bomb. Iran says its nuclear programme has only peaceful purposes.

Iranian state media said "millions" joined the rallies on Saturday.
