Hapoel qualified for the Champions League for the first time by drawing 1-1 with Austria's Salzburg at a packed Bloomfield Stadium on Tuesday, to win their playoff tie 4-3 on aggregate. This is the fourth time in Israel's history that a team has been represented. This will make this season a record one for Hapoel Tel Aviv, at least financially. According to estimates, the club's revenue this season will be at least NIS 80-85 million. The Champions League campaign alone will bring in nearly NIS 55 million. Reaching the group stage is worth €7.1 million; a grant for broadcasting rights some €1.5 million. Champions League officials are asking for the matches to be in Israel's national stadium which hosts 40,000 fans. Ramat Gan also hosted Maccabi Tel Aviv's group stage campaign six years ago and Maccabi Haifa's matches last season.
