Rival militias have exchanged gunfire in central Tripoli, highlighting the volatility of the country three months after Muammar Gaddafi's death.

It is reported that the gunbattle involved both light and heavy weapons and continued for around 40 minutes.

The gunshots could be heard coming from the El-Saadi beach district of the capital.
