Libyan Jew forced to stop cleaning Tripoli synagogue

Armed men threatened to kill a Libyan Jew who had returned to Tripoli hoping to clean the local synagogue and resurrect the Jewish community. David Gerbi, who went into exile in Italy following the 1967 Six Days War which sparked attacks on Jews living in Libya, told reporters on Monday armed men forced him to leave the synagogue in Tripoli which he had hoped to restore. Wearing a T-shirt with "I love Libya" written across the front, Gerbi said a man warned him that armed men with guns were approaching the synagogue and warned they may kill him. The man told Gerbi to flee the synagogue which he had broken into and begun cleaning. Gerbi, who cultivated ties with Libya's ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) during the uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi, said the incident would force the NTC to confront anti-Jewish prejudice following its pledges to build a democratic state that respects civil and human rights following decades of dictatorship. He has sought to secure a position in the NTC representing the Jews who were forced out of the country in 1969 and has hoped to assist in returning their properties which were confiscated by Gaddafi.
