Facebook jibe lands man 50,000 NIS fine

In an unprecedented case in Israeli law, a court in Haifa has convicted a resident of the North of Israel who uploaded a picture of his ex-girlfriend on to the social networking site facebook complete with a variety of colourful curses against her. The man's ex turned to the court of law in exceptional circumstances and the court convicted the man with the crime of slandering and has ordered that he pay 50,000 shekels compensation aswell handing down a community service order. The woman in the case, 31 and from Haifa, first met the man in the case known as 'Aleph' in 2007 after a relationship that lasted a few months the pair separated, a few months later she saw that he had posted a picture of her onto facebook along with a series of curses and unpleasant words.
