After several hours delay, Israel began releasing the 87 Palestinian prisoners, a Ramadan gesture to PA President Mahmoud Abbas and an attempt to bolster his government. Fifty seven Palestinian prisoners were bused from the Ketsiot Prison to the Beituniya crossing outside of Ramallah where scores of Palestinians waited to greet them. The release of thrity prisoners to the Gaza Strip is expected to take place late Monday or Tuesday. Meanwhile Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zouhri told reporters in Gaza that Israel's gesture was meaningless. He said his organization expected all the Palestinian prisoners to be set free and declared that since the last prisoner release just months ago, over 600 Palestinians had been arrested by security forces.10/01/07
